About David Simpson
David was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with a Photography degree. While still a student he participated in the MICA Faculty show at the Baltimore Museum of Art and began working professionally for Vansant Dugdale Advertising as a art director and photographer. During this time David received a scholarship in MICA’s Teaching Scholarship program and began work on his Masters.
In 1970 David opened his first photography studio, Simpson/Flint with a classmate and quickly began getting recognition. He won 11 local awards and one international award for best PSA for Time Magazine. David traveled the world as a national award-winning photographer for the next 20 years for clients like Coke, Nascar, and Royal Caribbean all over the country with studios in New York and Baltimore.
After years as a talent for hire, David began a new challenge, film. As a commercial director, David never shot another professional still photo for the next 20 years. Starting Filmhead Productions in 1986, he worked mainly out of NY, Toronto, Chicago, Vancouver, Italy and his favorite, Austin TX for clients like Southwest Airlines, Mastercard and Heineken, keeping him busy and traveling for the next 25 years.
By 2006 it was finally time to pick up the camera again, this time a digital model, it was time to work for himself. David created his first photography book in 2009 Loch Raven which sold out, followed by Glass House of Dreams 2012, The Swan at Loch Raven 2014, and presently has a book in progress. As a photographer David uses light like an Impressionist painter to reveal the ever-changing beauty, colors and serenity of natural settings.
David’s work can be viewed at www.davidsimpsonimages.com and is on exhibit at Karis Art Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC.
Artist Statement
I strive to find images that surprise both the viewer and myself. I enjoy working with larger visual concepts and then to photograph thousands of images reflecting that concept that I distill down to the core in the form of collections, books and shows. I look for similarities and congruities in nature and encourage people to think visually.
